Lube for water lovers

Hot and steamy shower sex may sound like a wet 'n wild adventure, but the shower (or pool, hot tub, ocean, etc.) is surprisingly dry territory when it comes to sex.

Counter-intuitive as it may seem, getting frisky in aqueous environs actually dries out the mucous membranes, which increases friction, potentially making penetration difficult and sore. Non-penetrative play can also become quickly uncomfortable and painful thanks to the added friction.

But I'm not here to tell you not to have sex in the shower (or creek, river, lake, etc.) If you happen to be looking for reasons why having sex in the shower IRL is far from the fantasy version we so often see in movies, Beca Grimm over at Bustle does a thorough job of laying it out.

For those of you who are planning on having sexy underwater funtimes, keep reading to make sure your lube stash is up to scratch!

Water isn’t the same as lube

While water is a primary ingredient in lots of lubes, H2O on its own does not a lube make. You know what water is great for, though? Washing!! And, indeed, if you’re getting down in the shower (or pond, gulf, bay, etc. ), the water will effectively wash away any natural lubrication, leaving your bits high and dry.

Successful lubing with silicone

Since water-based lubes get washed away just like natural lubrication does, if you’re going to have sex in the shower (or lagoon, loch, fjord, etc.), your best bet is a silicone-based lube, like Uberlube or Sliquid Silver. Silicone-based lubes aren’t water-soluble, which basically just means they’re waterproof! Unlike water, spit, or water-based lubes, they stay where you put them.

Caution: Slippery Floor

A silicone-based lube won’t just keep your bits glistening, it’ll also make the floor of your shower or tub incredibly slippery. So be sure to put down a stable and grippy bath mat before getting too lube-happy. Nothing kills the mood like an unexpected head injury.
